Analysis The Development Of Builsa Land Depends On Only Chiefs And Politicians -2019 Debate
FEB 9, 2020 LISTEN

Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate Time Keeper, Headmaster, Hardworking Teachers, Fellow Debaters, Fellow Students, Ladies and Gentlemen, I greet you all with honour.

I am the person of Ayaribil Angela and I attend Siniensi Junior High School. The motion before the house is “The Development of Builsa Land Depends on Only Chiefs and Politicians”, and I Ayaribil Angela, rise the speak against the motion as the first speaker.

Mr. Chairman, kindly permit me to explain some key words in the motion. Who is a chief? And who is a politician? According the Longman dictionary, approved by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and recommended for basic schools, a chief is a leader of a group or an organisation and a politician is someone who works in politics. Development is the process of growing, changing, or becoming better.

Mr. Chairman, here are some of the functions of a chief in the community; 1. The chief is the local judge, what it means is that, the chief deal with local issues in the community, 2. The chief is the messenger of his people, in the sense that, the chief is the mouth piece of the people in the community, 3. The chiefs ensure peace and unity in the community.

Now, what are the functions of the politicians? They provide us with social amenities like boreholes, toilet facilities, electricity and so on. What if they provide us with all these and the people of Buluk decide not to use them? There is a saying that, you can force a donkey to the river side but you can’t force it to drink the water.

Mr. chairman, politicians also make promises that they do not fulfil. For example, in 2013 they promised us that one child, one computer. In 2016, they had also promised us one village, one dam. Also, they promised to construct all the roads in the Builsa land since 2010. Mr. Chairman if I may ask, have they fulfilled all these promises they have made before? Obviously no! Now I Ayaribil Angela can say that the politicians are serious liars and we can live without them in the Buluk.

Mr. chairman, even though, chiefs and politicians exist in Ghana, they are not the only source of development in Buluk. There are non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as churches, they contribute in building schools, hospitals, giving out furniture and among others. Come to talk of CAMFED, which is an NGO that has been helping in girl child education which politicians tend to use as a campaign message to gain votes.

In addition, the development of Buluk depends on the preparedness and willingness of the people of Builsa land to cause positive change through change of attitude. If Builsa’s themselves are not prepared to develop their land, will the politicians do so? We must stop collecting things like drinks, soaps and money from them for exchange of votes. Each time those politicians come around we should rather ask for beneficial things to all the society like access to portable water and good roads as the price of our votes. If we are good citizens who stop deforestation, greediness or selfishness and envy, and support one another, we would not need a politician to develop.

Moreover, is support from successful Builsa’s living home and abroad. Once you are a child of Buluk, anywhere you go you will still be a Builsa, therefore there is the need to help develop our land to attract people to also come our communities just like how we are attracted to other places. If may ask, the Kumasi and the Accra that most of our youth are willing to go, especially every JHS graduate, were those places developed by only their chiefs and politicians? Obviously no! It is we ourselves who left our land to build over there and made those places much developed than our land.

Audience, I want you all to put yourselves in these shoes, imagine, reflect and think, if all the houses, farms, schools, hospitals, hotels, businesses and so on, belonging to Builsa’s in different parts of the country are to be moved to the Builsa land, imagine how it will look? How will the Builsa land look? Will anyone desire to run away from our land? In fact, I don’t think so.

In conclusion, I believe that the development of the Builsa land does not only depend political leaders and chiefs because, leadership is shared responsibility, and there cannot be change if we do not have a common goal and the mindset to work towards it.

Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate Time Keeper, Headmaster, Hardworking Teachers, Fellow Debaters, Fellow Students, Ladies and Gentlemen, I therefore call upon the whole house including my opponents to join us kick out the motion that “The Development of Builsa Land Depends on Only Chiefs and Politicians” thank you! My name again is Ayaribil Angela.

This debate is written and presented by Miss Ayaribil Angela, a member of the Debate and Leadership Team of Siniensi J.H.S, during her JHS two days. This was to support her aguement against the motion stated above to collegue students at school on Friday, 28th June, 2019. Angela is now in J.H.S 3.
