The Ministry Gender, Children and Social Protection has on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, engaged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Northern, North East and Savannah regions of Ghana on the yet to be rolled out single household registration exercise in the area.

The Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR), a unit under the Ministry has been mandated to establish a single national household register from which social protection programs will select their beneficiaries in Ghana.

Addressing some District Chief Executives and some officers of MMDAs in Tamale, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison said beneficiaries of all social protection programmes in Ghana will be selected from the single household register after its completion.

“The data collection exercise is line with the government’s policy to develop an integrated programme for the registration and eventual selection of all persons including school children, persons with disability as well as others facing chronic poverty into a common database for the purposes of targeting them for LEAP and other social protection interventions being implemented in the country” Hon. Morrison noted.

According to Madam Cynthia, the data collection when completed will eliminate duplications in targeting among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) involved in the implementation of pro-poor interventions. She added it will also be used for public policy planning and management as well as research and development in the areas of social protection for the poor, vulnerable, and excluded in the society.

The Hon. Minister however appealed Ministries, Chief Executives and Coordinating Directors to facility the process of community entry of the team, provide office space, logistics and any other assistance that would enable the GNHR team carry out a successful exercise in the three regions.

Dr. Prosper B. Laari, the National Coordinator in his presentation said the GNHR since its establishment has so far successfully completed household data collection in the Upper West and Upper East regions in December 2017 and May, 2018 respectively. He disclosed the data from the two regions have been analysed and disseminated.

“The Ministry has so far registered 137,565 and 184,125 households in the Upper West and Upper East regions respectively” he revealed.

Dr. Laari stated plans are far advanced to commence the registration exercise in the Northern, North East and Savannah regions in May 2020. He observed the register will help streamline the numerous social protection programmes being implemented in Ghana.

The National Coordinator of the GNHR said “the core of the project is electronic enumeration of households and data collection will be conducted using the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI). This will be undertaken by professional data collection firms to be hired by the GNHR through approved procurement processes, so it is important the MMDAs offer the staff all the necessary support to undertake this exercise successfully” he admonished MMDAs.

The general public was however admonished to avail themselves for questioning when officers of the exercise visit their homes and offer the right answers.
