Public relations officer for the Education Ministry, Vincent Assafuah has denied that Government has paid GHC49,998,626.72 as settlement of arrears owed teachers.’

The Daily Guide newspaper on Thursday, December 12, 2019 published that Government had released GHC49m as settlement of outstanding arrears which the teachers have termed as ‘Legacy Debt’

But reacting to the publication on AGOO TV’s Yensempa show this morning with host Bonohene Baffour Awuah, Vincent Asafoah said the publication was far from the truth.

According to him, Givernemnt does not owe in arrears such amount as published by the newspaper.

‘We haven’t released such amount to be paid to teachers because we do not owe the teachers that much.’

‘The amount we currently owe is GHC8m not GHC49M as the news paper is reporting’.

The three teacher unions had embarked on a strike to pile pressure on government to have arrears they have termed as ‘Mahama arrears settled’ before the returned to the classroom.

The money being demanded by the three teacher unions namely; Ghana National Association of Graduate teachers, Ghana Association of Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers were incurred from former President during his time as president, a GES statement had explained.
