J.B. Tanzienye a 65 year old farmer from Gyimiso in the Obuasi East District has been adjudged District best farmer for the Obuasi East District at the just ended 35th Farmers’ Day Celebration at Ayease in the Obuasi East District.
Mr Tanzienye who has no formal education, for his prize as the District Best Farmer took home Tricycle, Knapsack Sprayer, Cutlass, Field Boots, Key Soap, Cloth and Certificate of Merit.
When the sword was handed over to the District best farmer Mr. Tanzienye, who could not hide his excitement for winning the best farmer award attributed his success to hard work and perseverance. He then advised that any farmer who wish to take the sword from him must work hard. He encouraged the youth to develop interest in agriculture since it is lucrative.
The National Farmers’ Day Celebration which was instituted in 1984 is marked annually to recognize the efforts of farmers in the Country. The celebration also witnessed the presentation of awards to farmers across the country who have distinguished themselves in their line of work.
In her key note address the District Chief Executive for Obuasi East, Hon. Faustina Amissah congratulated farmers in the District for helping accelerate the social economic development of the Country.
Touching on the theme for this year‘s farmers day celebration ″ENHANCING SMALL SCALE AGRICULTURE TOWARDS AGRIBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT″ the DCE said the value chain approach is to strengthen collaboration, coordination, and commitment of all sector stakeholders to overcome most of the challenges facing the food and agriculture sector in order to enhance growth, create sustainable employment, increase income, reduce poverty and achieve sufficient food and nutrition security for the people of Ghana.
She enumerated the successes chalked by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo through programmes such as Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), Rearing for Food and Jobs (RFJ), One District One Factory (1D1F).
Under the Planting for Export and Rural Development, she said the district has taken advantage of this laudable policies and programmes and has raised 11,500 Oil Palm Seedling earmarked for distribution to beneficiary farmers early next year. She also assured the farmers that an additional 20,000 Oil Palm Seedlings would be raised for 2020 farming season.
She posited that these pragmatic efforts by government could not have been successful without the farmers, she then urged all farmers present to consider farming as not only a way of life but most importantly as business.
The District Agric Director Mr. Victor Owusu Ansah on his part congratulated noble farmers who toil day and night to feed Mother Ghana and the District, for their immense contribution towards the development of the country.
Reflecting on the functions of the department of Agriculture at the district level, he mentioned education of farmers on proven modern technologies in the sub-sector of Agriculture, assisting farmers to obtain suitable planting materials and improved breeds of livestock and farm input.
He said, farmers have been educated on the value chain concept to help link the various actors in the value chain which he mentioned as Producers, Processors, Marketers, and Input Dealers. He said that home and farm visits were carried out to educate the gallant farmers on improved technology which comprises of educational forum on Planting for Food and Jobs, Sensitization on group formation, good nutrition and income generation. He advised farmers to learn how to identify farming problems and be innovative.
Nana Kuttein Assadu, the Adontenhene of Ayaase who chaired the occasion added his voice to the call on government to fix in major roads that link Ayease township and also praised government for the plethora of programs in the Agriculture Sector.
Madam Celestina Agboketey of Akaporiso and Mr. Akwasi Gyame of Nyamesomyede took home the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In all 20 competitive farmers were honored on the day.
The District Coordinating Director Mr. Emmanuel Ntoso was in attendance as well as Heads of Department, Ex- Assembly Members, representatives of political parties and the media were also present.
