GCB gives 105 million cedis to six institutions

Accra, March 22, GNA - Ghana Commercial Bank Limited (GCB) on Wednesday donated a total of 105 million cedis to six separate institutions for their contribution to society. The beneficiary institutions included the Ghana Heart Foundation, Cancer Society of Ghana, Blind Teachers Association, Ghana Solar Scientific Committee, West African College of Surgeons and University of Ghana Medical School.

Mr Lawrence Adu, Managing Director of the Bank, who made the donation, said it was in response to appeals made by these institutions for financial assistance. He said GCB in 1998 recognized the relevant contribution of the Heart Foundation to the health needs of Ghanaians and had ever since made annual donations to this cause. Mr Adu said the Bank donated 50 million cedis this year to improve physical infrastructures at the Cardio Thoracic Centre at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The University of Ghana Medical School received 10 million cedis to host its Third Annual Scientific Conference while the Solar Eclipse Scientific Committee had 10 million cedis to rekindle interest of science in students. The Bank gave five million cedis to the Blind Teachers Association of Ghana in support of the National Conference of Blind Teachers scheduled for April 5 to April 8 2006.

The Cancer Society received 10 million as assistance to its outreach programme while the West Africa College of Surgeons had 20 million cedis. Professor E.D. Yeboah, President of the West African College of Surgeons, thanked the Bank and promised that the funds would be used judiciously to train a young generation of Ghanaian surgeons and specialists to continue to give quality health care.
