On November 20th each year the world marks the commemoration of the signing of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. The day is also observed as WORLD CHILDREN'S DAY.

The Convention on the rights of the child (CRC) is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history and has helped to transform children’s lives around the world.

This year's event was on the theme: 'Light Up The World In Blue In Support Of Child Rights'

It is in this direction that a remarkable and historic ceremony came off recently at the Independence Square, specifically the Black Star Gate to celebrate the 2019 edition in a grand style.

The Black Star Gate was lighted up in BLUE Colours by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, UNICEF and its partners in marking the 30th Anniversary of the Convention

Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Cynthia Morrison, stated that this year 2019, is the 30th Anniversary of the Convention.

"This is extra special for children in Ghana as since we are marking 40 years of government machinery for child rights implementation in the country. We have gathered here to light up one of the country’s most iconic landmarks the Black Star Gate in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners," Hon. Cynthia Morrison indicated.

She said the organizers settled on The Black Star Gate because it represents the courage of Ghana's forefathers, their blood and toil for a free country for us all.

"It is in this regard that we are proud to be associated with the 30 years of rights CRC in Ghana with this monument. As we light up this gate, we will call on all in Ghana to renew their commitment towards the protection of all children and to ensure that all rights due them are fully implemented," she stressed.

The Honourable Gender Minister further called for a new era for the protection of children; an era where children have peace and happiness they need to grow up to be responsible adults.

"It is in this regard that it is a great pleasure and an honour to join my dear children on this hallowed ground to light up the Black Star Gate in blue colours. We are telling the whole world that Ghana has high regard for its children and every duty bearer must wake up to their roles and responsibility," she pointed out.

She added "May Our children grow up happy and protected from harm, abuse and exploitation. May our children grow up to realize their full potential in a society that pays special attention to their views. I light the Black Star Gate in Blue on behalf of Government, the children of Ghana, children beyond the whole wide world."
