Africa Education Watch is demanding of government to build at least, one public school in Agbogbloshie to make education affordable and accessible to the inhabitants there.

According to the NGO, all schools in Agbogbloshie, a slum community in Ghana, are private, mostly not affordable and accessible to the inhabitants, leading to low enrolment, retention and completion rates in basic education.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, in reaction to government’s decision to construct a 600 bed hostel in Agbogbloshie to provide decent housing facilities for the slum dwellers, the NGO commended government for thinking about the slum dwellers but recommended that, at least, a public school should be built to support the dwellers.

“We urge the Ministry of Education to liaise with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Development Partners to consider constructing a public basic school in addition to the 600-bed hostel in Agbogbloshie,” the statement said.
