The Finance and Administration Manager of Golden Star Resources (GSR), Bogoso – Prestea Limited in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality has said, it is the mining company’s responsibility to extend help as a good cooperate citizen.

Mr. Rodney Oddoye made the statement at the Himan Palace on Monday November 11, 2019, during the donation of some food items to communities that were swallowed by River Ankobra.

The food items include 500 pieces of 5 kilograms of rice and 400 pieces of 1 litre cooking oil which are to be distributed to victims in Himan, Ankobra, Dwabeng, Boppo and Ehyiraso are at a cost of Ghc 24,000.

Mr. Oddoye said the unfortunate situation that happened to the residents cannot be looked on unconcerned by the company. This is because many of the communities are workers of the company.

He reiterated that “we live and work in the communities and many of our workers come from the communities. And so if anything happens to the members of the communities, it happens to our workers as well”

He believes, as a responsible mining firm which has host communities at heart, it is their cooperate obligation to extend help to people who need it in the host communities.

“As good corporate citizens, it is our responsibility to help. When we help in fact we are helping ourselves because we are helping our workers, our parents and then loved ones”, Mr. Oddoye said.

On his part, the Prestea Huni –Valley Municipal National Disaster Management Organization Boss Abeiku Yankah, acknowledged the urgency of GSR in swiftly helping host communities.

He told modernghana.com that, the food items will be distributed according to the list of the affected persons and assured, everyone would be sorted out.

Receiving the items on behalf of the communities, the Divisional Chief of Himan Traditional Area Nana Nteboah Prah IV thanked GSR, for their magnanimity.

Nana pleaded with the company to assist in fumigating the affected areas to avoid outbreak of any disease, since the floods may have pushed filth to the communities and had left stagnant waters.

You may recall that, two weeks ago, five communities in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, got submerged in River Ankobra.

The floods in Himan, Ankobra, Dwabeng, Enhyiraso and Boppo forced residents to seek shelter elsewhere.

Though the floods are receding, residents have been advised not to return.
