The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the New Juaben North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwadwo Boateng-Agyemang, has said the NPP government has had a better cocoa production and pricing regime as compared to the NDC which spent more on the sector.
According to him, President Nana Addo’s administration has seen a higher productivity rate in the cocoa industry than the NDC.
Speaking on ‘Pae Mu Ka’ with Lawyer Ohene Gyan on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7, Kwadwo Boateng-Agyemang said, “President Nana Addo has transformed the cocoa sector massively than the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration.”
“With goodwill for Ghana’s cocoa farmers, the government has decided to continue to motivate the cocoa farmers by deciding to increase the price of cocoa,” he said.
He stressed that the introduction of the mass spraying of cocoa farms and the pruning of cocoa trees have significantly contributed to the high cocoa produce yield after the NPP took over power.
According to him, under Akufo-Addo, a lot of foreign cocoa processing companies came into the country to boost the sector and to add value to Ghana’s cocoa.
The government has announced an increase in cocoa producer price by more than 8 percent for the next crop season.
Kwadwo Boateng-Agyemang said, this is the first time Ghana is focusing on a medium to Long term financing of cocoa.
The Minority in Parliament argued that the government must utilize the cocoa stabilization fund established by the previous government, to cushion farmers instead of the insensitive approach the COCOBOD intends to use.
