Ghana-Burkina Interconnectivity Will Last For 100 Years — Minister

The Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey has revealed that the Ghana-Burkina Interconnectivity Railway line which when completed will last a hundred (100) years.

He added that the project will enable easy transfer of goods and services of individuals between both countries.

According to him, building a railway line is expensive likewise its maintenance thus the need to ensure that the ongoing project does not go waste after 10years.

Addressing the media at a Meet-The-Press in Accra, Hon. Joe Ghartey said "this is a 1000km stretch of railway line which will connect both countries. The distance from Tema to Paga is 800km whereas Paga to Burkina is 200km".

He added that the Ghana-Burkina Interconnectivity will not only strengthen the bond between the two nations but help business men and women transport their good with comfort.

The Minister however noted that although language is set to be a barrier, measures are in place to deal with such issue.

He also mentioned that Contractors through their feasibility study are communicating with government on how to build the railway line without encountering problems.

He said "We have tried to keep the cost at USD$4 to USD$ Million Dollars. In the regions, the rail will touch every business area. It is a standard gauge railway line and the axel road was 225 but we have extended it to 25".

The Minister however commended the Government of Burkina Faso emphasising that the french-speaking country has agreed to pay half of the total cost involved.

Hon Ghartey disclosed that 14 companies showed interest in the project but through carefully assessment, the numbers were shortlisted to only 4.

He lauded the previous government for adhering to Chapter 6 of the Constitution and continuing the project which was signed in 2007.

"Contractors say the first 100km of the Tema to Mpakadan will be completed in August 2020. Volta River Major Bride Location is 72 + 585 to 72 + 915 kilometres with a total length of 330 meters that is 6 spans by 60m + 2spans by 15m".

The Minister also noted that the port of Tema is receiving face-lift additing that it will become the biggest in Africa.

Although the Minister didn't disclose the types of coaches to be used likewise it's sourcing, he has assured that compensations have been set aside for individuals whose properties will be affected as a result of the construction.
