The Manhyia Divisional Police Command has picked up ten students of the Kumasi Technical Institute in connection with a clash that left a teacher injured and school property vandalized.

According to the Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah, their preliminary investigations revealed that attempts by teachers during prep hours to get students to comply with the school's dress code led to the riot.

“We have ten of the students now. What we gathered from the ground is that it is a second cycle institution – They were supposed to go for prep and be in a prescribed uniform for the prep. Some students refused to be in the prescribed uniform so the house masters tried to insist that they wear the prescribed uniform to class. This did not go down well with the students and that is how they started causing damage to the school. It was quite extensive. From the dormitory to the department to the house masters’ bungalows. They destroyed a lot of things.”

There have been similar clashes that have led to the closure of some schools in the country.

Just recently, the Sandema Secondary Technical School in the Upper East Region was shut down for two weeks by the Bulsa North District Security Committee after disturbances led to the death of one student.

An emergency District Security Committee meeting with stakeholders decided to close down the school to ascertain the extent of damage and put in place safety measures before students were recalled on July 30, 2019.

A misunderstanding between the School's Cadet corps and the rest of the student body over strict compliance to retire to bed after preps led to the clash.

In June, the Nabdam District Security Committee also closed down the Kongo Senior High School in the Upper East Region following a clash between Talensi and Frafra students.
