DPS International Marks World Teachers’ Day 2019

DPS International Ghana commemorated the 2019 edition of the annual World Teachers’ Day on 9th Oct 2019.

Also referred to as the International Teachers’ Day, the World Teachers' Day, is an event held annually on October 5.

The Day, created in 1994, celebrates the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

The Recommendation is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situations of global teachers.

The Celebration at DPSI aims to focus on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world."

It also seems to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.

This year marks the second edition of the celebration in DPS International.

As part of activities to observe the Day on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, the senior-most students of DPS International, played the role of teachers.

They took over teaching and learning activities on the Day to express their immense appreciation for the unconditional support they have received from their teachers.

An A-Level Science Student, Amanda E. Tamakloe, acted as the Principal of the day taking over the Office of the substantive Principal, Mr.David Raj.

Supporting Ms Tamakloe on the Day as Vice-Principal was Clive Andoh-Dontoh, an A-Level Commerce Student.

Both of them moved from class to class making sure that each teacher was in class and effective teaching was taking place under the able guidance of the student-teacher of the day.

The student-teachers of the day had come well prepared for their teaching activity with audio and video resources. They also made sure that the juniors were well disciplined.

The two of them had played the roles of teachers last year.

The Head of English Department at DPS International, Helen David and the HOD Science Mr. Daniel Osei-Danso, coordinated for the Celebration which was graced by Maam Richa Rao, the wife of Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Birendra Singh.

Sharing her experience as the Principal for the Day, Ms Tamakloe said: "We know that the work of teachers is extremely difficult; So today we celebrate them for just being so patient, so kind and still be able to mould us in a way that they do."

According to her, students have tried to be more understanding of how teachers relate to students.

There were about 102 students who played the roles of teachers on the Day, with substantive teachers organizing and conducting the assembly.

On his part, Mr Clive Andoh-Dontoh said: "This day has made us realize that teachers’ job is not easy."

He added, “Today, based on the challenges that we have faced, it really makes me appreciate what my teachers have done for me over the years."

The Heads of Departments and other teachers supervised the students who taught on the Day.

"This is just to help the students experience the noble job of teachers and instill the leadership qualities in them," said Mr Osei-Danso.

He remarked that celebrating teachers boosts their morale and make them give off their best.
