OCT 2, 2019 LISTEN

The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong Boanuh has directed the immediate interdiction of two police officers, No 38902 General Sergeant Patrick Amoako and No 46796 General Lance Corporal Isaac Marfo of Railway police station under the Koforidua District police Command.

The two officers were captured in a video torturing a suspect in police custody.

The video which went viral on social media showed the officers whipping a handcuffed and bare-chested suspect countless times.

According to The Chronicle Newspaper, the officers used the rubber material of bicycle tyres to assault the suspect who had allegedly stolen GHS1,600 from his employer.

The suspect, who has only been identified as Dodzi, according to The Chronicle, insisted that he took GHS350 from his boss' private car and not the reported GHS1,600 he was being accused of stealing.

Despite the initial denial of the incident by the two policemen, they allegedly claimed that they sought to extract a confession from the suspect and therefore resorted to beating him.

Father of the suspect, Mr Alegbe Daniel told The Chronicle that his son was illegally detained from Friday until he was granted bail on Monday without medical attention.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Police Command says it will punish the police officers involved in the act.

The command said the act is criminal and an affront to its code of ethics.

“By close of Wednesday, the regional command will go into details and come out with something concrete. The police officers involved have breached our code of conduct so the police administration will approach this administratively,” Deputy PRO of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado.
