Man remanded after granted 30 million cedis bail

Tema, Feb. 20, GNA - A thirty-seven-year-old radio mechanic was remanded in police custody by the Tema Circuit Court 'A' for possessing Indian hemp ten minutes after he was granted a 30 million cedis bail by the same court for stealing.

Godson Dzikunu, the accused, pleaded not guilty to stealing and guilty of possession of Indian hemp without authority and is to reappear in court on March 13, 2006 for both cases.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Matilda Tetteh told the court that, Madam Edith Abla Agboloso, complainant for the stealing case is a native of Abor in the Volta Region and a trader, while accused is a radio mechanic, who resided at Kasseh in the Dangme East District. She told the court that, the complainant, who knew the accused from her home town, gave him a DVD and Video Deck in December 2005 for safe keeping until she closed from market that same day. Chief Inspector Tetteh said the complainant returned from the market to the accused workshop but he was not there, she therefore returned four days later to be told by one Daniel, an apprentice of the accused that, his master has sold the said items. The prosecutor said a complaint was lodged to the Kasseh police, when all efforts by the complainant to retrieve the items from the accused proved futile.

When the accused was arrested, he promised to return the items to the complainant within four days giving the complainant 400,000 cedis for transportation to and fro to collect the items.

On February 14, 2006, the complainant with her son, who gave the items to her, went to the accused workshop to collect the items, however, upon seeing them, the accused got offended and started insulting them, resulting in a fight between him and complainant's son. Chief Inspector Tetteh told the court that, the fight landed them in the police station were a search on the accused revealed six wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in a match box and hidden in his shirt. Accused informed the police in his caution statement that, he uses the narcotic in radio mechanic works.
