Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Education Winneba, Kumasi campus (UEWK) at Tanoso in the Kwadaso municipality of the Ashanti Region has set Monday, September 11, 2019, to demonstrate over vehicular killings on the Sofoline-Abuakwa highway.

According to the body, the unavailability of road signs and traffic lights on the highway, where the school is located, has lead to the killings of persons by vehicles, including their students, a situation they described as worrying.

The SRC President at UEW-Kumasi, Samuel Clinton Boateng made the threat on Monday, September 2, 2019 on Otec FM’s morning show programme ‘Asanteman Nkwan’hosted by Captain Koda, on a project called ‘Operation Fix Our Roads’ (#OFOR).

He said the demonstration is to draw the attention of the municipal authorities the dangers posed by the non availability of road signs and traffic lights on pedestrians, and the urgent need to fix the situation.

He revealed that over 17, 000 students’ lives are in danger as the unavailability of road no signs and traffic lights pose danger to pedestrian crossing the highway, a situation that makes it difficult for the students to go out, especially in the evening.

He disclosed that the student body has petitioned the Municipal Chief Executive for the Kwadaso municipality Hon. Agyenim Boateng Richmond and the Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso constituency, Hon. Dr. S.K. Nuamah, over the problem but to no action has been taken.

“Four of our students were knocked down by speeding vehicles in the last three months, sustaining serious degrees of injuries and other pedestrians have also been knocked down and killed by over speeding vehicles,” he disclosed.

"We have called several times on the government to at least provide us Police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to check traffic on the highway but the authorities have no intention to help us," he cried out.

He continued, “The peaceful demonstration is to inform the authorities once again that lives are threatened and lost so the need to provide road signs and traffic lights on the highway, but if they refuse at a certain period, then they will hear from us in another manner.”

Residents and motorists plying the road had already raised red flag about their vulnerability to road accidents on the highway as a result of the non-functional traffic lights at the Asuoyeboah Market Junction to Tanoso UEWK campus junction.
