Karpower Barge Arrives In Sekondi Naval Base

General News Karpower Barge Arrives In Sekondi Naval Base
AUG 16, 2019 LISTEN

The Karpower barge has relocated to Sekondi Naval Base.

The relocation of the powership is to enable it to utilize Natural Gas from the Western Enclave, which is expected to save government millions of cedis yearly.

This is expected to save the state a significant amount of money.

The Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan replaced a 225 megawatts barge which was delivered on November 2015.

The arrival of the vessel was part of the Power Purchase Agreement signed with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), requiring Karpowership Ghana Company Limited to provide a total of 450MW capacity, and directly feed it into the national grid for ten years.

Ghana's installed capacity of 5,083 MW is almost double the peak demand of around 2,700 MW. Karpower barge relocation won't adversely affect power supply – GRIDCo

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) earlier assured that the relocation of the Karpowership barge to Sekondi will not have an “ adverse impact ” on power supply in the country.

GRIDCo in a statement assured that: “there is adequate generating capacity to meet power demand during the period that the barge will be temporarily disconnected from the national grid.”
