Akufo-Addo Promises Tono Water Project Will Be Completed By July 2021

President Akufo-Addo has announced that rehabilitation works on the Tono water supply system in the Upper East region will be completed by July 2021.

This is to address water challenges in the Navrongo area.

The project which cost £42 million is partly funded by the ING Belgium Bank and the Dutch Government when completed will produce 20,500 cubic meters of water per day.

Addressing chiefs of the Navrongo traditional area, President Nana Addo was optimistic that the project, when completed, will resolve the perennial water challenges of Navrongo and Bolga.

“I am happy that I am able to report that two of the most important projects are all going on in good shape. The Tono irrigation project that was allowed to decay and decline drastically, unfortunately, is now the subject of comprehensive rehabilitation and they are going on very well.”

“My understanding from the contractors and consultants is that within nine months from now, the entire project will be up and doing so that the farmers in the area can benefit from all-year-round agriculture. The water project is now going to be able to supply Navrongo and all the catchment areas and will be ready in July 2021. They are 36 percent complete and by the end of next year, the whole project will be completed to end any water problems that there are in this area”, he added.

Speaking to the chiefs and people in the region, Nana Akufo-Addo also urged traditional leaders and Ghanaians to help nip fertilizer smuggling in the bud.

He appealed to traditional leaders to support the fight by exposing security officials who may want to shield perpetrators of smuggling.

“We should all understand one thing; we use taxpayers' money to buy fertilizer and subsidise it by 50 percent in order to improve the productivity of our farmers. It is our money but we have a handful of greedy criminals who smuggle our fertilisers to Burkina Faso. I am appealing to all of you, the traditional authorities population [to help stop some of these things]. I have seen the ones that have been seized. This is not right, all of us should band together to stop the smuggling of our fertilizer to Burkina Faso.”

President Akufo-Addo is currently on a six-day tour of the Northern and Upper Regions of Ghana.

He has been commissioning completed projects, inspecting work in progress and cutting the sod for new projects across the two regions.

He is also holding interactions with the chiefs and people of both regions as well as interact with students and tutors at selected educational institutions.
