The Electoral Commission has debunked assertions that it was not adequately prepared to tackle the Replacement of Voter ID card exercise.
The exercise which began on Thursday has been dogged with complaints of inadequate material and winding queues at some of the centres.
Critics say this showed a lack of preparedness on the part of the EC.
But speaking to Citi News, Communications Officer of the Electoral Commission, Sylvia Annoh said although there have been a few mishaps, her outfit is working to resolve them.
“We were not doing replacement for voters’ ID cards so definitely we anticipated having a backlog. All these issues, we are prepared to handle them. I spoke to the officials in charge and yesterday, we had some power outage but it was not for a long period. It was brief…Definitely going forward the queue will diminish.”
The Electoral Commission resumed the issuance of Voters ID cards to Ghanaians who have misplaced theirs in March 2019.
The Commission in August 2018 suspended the Voter ID card replacement exercise to retool the voter management systems at the district level.
The electoral body, however resumed the replacement in March.
Replacement of lost ID cards at the EC
The Electoral Commission has put in place arrangements to replace ID cards for registered voters who have misplaced theirs.
The replacement of lost voter ID cards is done at all district offices nationwide at a fee.
Any person who loses his voter I.D. card will within 7 days of becoming aware of the loss report the loss in person to the District Officer of the Commission or to the nearest police station.
The Police officer in charge will in turn, report the loss to the District Officer of the Commission within 7 days of the receipt of the report.
