Immigration Service Seizes ‘Wee’ Bound For Togo

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted a large quantity of dried leaves in loaded bags containing 127 parcels suspected to be marijuana in the Ketu North Municipality Volta Region.

The arrest took place on August 1, 2019 at about 11:30pm.

The Akanu Sector Commander, C/Supt. Godson Attobrah, said the team picked up intelligence from an anonymous source on activities of a suspected drug syndicate specialised in smuggling ‘weed’ in the village of Apedido, a suburb of Akanu.

He said the substance was reportedly being prepared to be sent to neighboring Togo.

Godson Attobrah said he deployed his special team of Border Patrol Unit officers, led by Assistant Inspector Kofi Asante, ICO Joshua Andoh Mensah and AICO1 Lucky Dzokoto to foil the illegal activities, seize the consignment and apprehend the culprits.

The commander further disclosed that the smugglers managed to escape when his officers got to the crime scene but after a search in the area, they uncovered huge packages stuffed with 127 parcels of substance suspected to be cannabis.

“Officers who conducted the operation were able to secure the safe arrival of the suspected substance to the Akanu Border Post of the GIS, and further investigations will soon commence,” he stressed.

The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, DCI Peter Claver Nantuo (esq), a day after the operation, travelled to the sector command to supervise in the handing over of the suspected consignments to the Dzodze District Police Commander, DSP Christian Dogbatza.

Briefing the media at Akanu, the commander used the opportunity to congratulate the Sector Commander for Akanu, Mr Godson Attobrah, and his men for their hard work and professionalism.

The Regional Commander further applauded them for exhibiting a high level of integrity, fortitude and resilience in the performance of their duty.

In his commitment to effectively collaborate with other state security agencies in the region, Mr Peter Claver Nantuo intimated that “inter-security agencies collaboration was very necessary to demystify the perception of lack of inter-security collaboration”.

He cautioned those indulging in cross-border and cyber-related crimes to desist from such illegal practices, and added that the GIS is in full readiness to combat those illegal syndicates head-on.

“We will not, we cannot, and shall not give them an inch again; we shall not give those that believe in international cross-border crimes an inch,” he strongly warned.

The Regional Commander used his concluding remarks of the media briefing in thanking the media for their support in the fight against crime in the region.

Mr Nantuo also commended the general public for their support in sharing of information, and assured them of the Regional Command’s confidentiality whenever information is disclosed.
