Obuasi, Jan. 26, GNA - The Department of Urban Roads will undertake more works this year to improve the state of roads within the Obuasi municipality.

Mr. B.A. Sowah, the Obuasi Roads Engineer of the Department, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Obuasi on Tuesday, said the works would involve the marking of the Kunka Junction, road lines and the positioning of road signs.

Other activities would include the actual construction work, he added and named the Municipal Assembly-Obuasi Secondary/Technical School road as one of the roads to be tackled.

Mr Sowah said the Department had identified some culverts as under-sized and hope to replace them with appropriate culverts. The Municipal Roads Engineer said the Department spent around 1.3 billion cedis on the grading of about 55 kilometres of roads, which contributed to the opening up of some of the suburbs as well as easy access to important facilities in the municipality. He said last year, the Department did normal routine maintenance activities, including the cleaning of drains and culverts and pothole patching.

"Under pothole patching, we did desilting of drain channels on a great scale", Mr Sowah said.

He added that they did some grass cutting to improve visibility of motorists and pedestrians and also undertook minor drain repairs and slabs replacement.
