Ashanti police calls for the formation of neighbourhood watch committees

By GNA

Kumasi, Jan 21, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Police Command has appealed to residents in the region to form communal associations and initiate the formation of neighbourhood watch committees in their communities to help curb the incidence of crime, especially robbery. A statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jordan Quaye, the Regional Public Relations Officer and issued in Kumasi on Friday, said the relative reduction in crimes in the region during the latter part of 2005 and early 2006, should encourage the public to appreciate the feat and assist the police in all aspects to sustain crime prevention.

The statement particularly mentioned the recording of zero fatal accident cases and crimes during the last Christmas and New Year festivities in the region and commended the regional police high command for their exemplary leadership and good sense of direction, which accounted for the crime-free festivities. It also commended other security agencies such as the military for supporting the police in carrying out crime prevention exercises in the region.

The statement called on the public not only to see the shortfalls of the police but also recognize and show appreciation when the police performed creditably in crime prevention and the safety of the citizenry.
