Tumu Youth jubilate over the rejection of nominated DCE

Tumu, Jan. 16, GNA - There was an eruption of spontaneous jubilation by some youth of Tumu in the Upper West Region on Monday, when the Sissala East District Assembly at an emergency meeting rejected Mr Ahmed Issah, the President's nominee as District Chief Executive. This prompted the Regional Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery to caution them against such behaviour since such actions had the potential of dividing District Assemblies, which he said were channels for developing their communities.

Mr Issah, a Transport Officer of the Northern Electricity Department of the Volta River Authority had polled only eight out of the 21 votes cast in the ballot, conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission.

As soon as Mr Yahaya Mahama, the Upper west Regional Director of the EC declared the result, the youth who had massed in groups outside the hall, went wild with jubilation.

The Regional Minister described the jubilation as unnecessary and advised the youth of the town to make sure that their reaction to the result did not go beyond exercising their democratic rights to create security problems in the town.

Democratic rights, he said, should never be expressed in forms that create animosity and mar peace.

"As good governance entails the respect for opposing views, the President and Government will be disappointed if you d o not cooperate and rather create security problems in the district". The Wa East and Sissala West District Assemblies had earlier in the week, endorsed their respective nominees as District Chief Executives without a single vote being cast against any of them
