MAY 13, 2019 LISTEN

The Youth Coalition for promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals in Northern Ghana by this open statement to the press wishes to congratulate His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his re-nomination as Co-Chair of the SDG Advocates group by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Indeed, we are of the firm belief that President Akufo-Addo’s re-nomination by the UN Secretary General to serve as Co-Chair of this eminent group not only exalts his strong personal commitment to driving action towards the achievements of the global goals but only brings much honor to the nation Ghana for continually prioritizing advocacy on the SDGs particularly in Africa.

The coalition also wishes to seize this opportunity to once again remind H.E President Akufo-Addo of the need to institutionalize SDG education in Ghana by mainstreaming the SDGs into the curriculum of Basic and Senior High Schools in Ghana. This in our opinion will provide a very unique opportunity for young people to gain more knowledge and exposure on the SDGs at a very early stage in life and therefore drive their interest in taking action for the realization of these goals both now and in the future.

We also wish to congratulate the other nominees; Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium (Co-Chair), His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Mr. Richard Curtis, Ms. Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Mr. Jack Ma, Mrs. Graça Machel, Ms. Dia Mirza, Dr. Alaa Murabit, Ms. Nadia Murad, Mr. Edward Ndopu, Mr. Paul Polman, Mr. Jeffrey Sachs, Ms. Marta Vieira da Silva and Mr. Forest Whitaker for their readiness to inspire greater ambition and raise awareness on the SGDs globally.

We are very confident the SDG Advocates group will continue to work towards engaging more young people in the quest to empower people, enhance prosperity, and sustain life on this planet through partnerships and global peace.

SIGNED.
