Education Bosomtwe: Pupils stand or sit on the floor to study over lack of classrooms
MAY 8, 2019 LISTEN

Residents of Adagya in the Bosomtwe district of the Ashanti region have appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosomtwe constituency to provide classroom structures to meet increasing enrolments at the Adagya D/A Primary School.

They said the GES and the MP, Hon. Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, have turned deaf ears to their pleas upon numerous petitions, a situation they said has compelled the school authorities to enroll more pupils than necessary, affecting effective teaching and learning.

Ironically, the MP is the Deputy Minister of Education, who is championing for high quality of education with his government’s Free Senior High School policy.

The Assembly Member for the Adagya Electoral Area, Hon. Emmanuel Adams in an interview with Otec News’ reporter, Evans Agyei Sika, “Nyansapo” show on Tuesday said he had written to the MP on several occasions on the situation with pictures attached, but all have proved in futility.

The primary school, according to the assembly member, was funded by the community and wants the government to assist by putting up additional structures.

“Primary class One, with a 30 pupil capacity, now has 50 children and Class 2 has an over population of 58. Class 3 harbors 90 children, Class 4 has 76 and Class 5 now has 112 intakes, with some children standing and others sitting on the floor. A mono desk that takes two children, is been occupied by four children. The school lacks classrooms, tables and chairs to meet the increasing enrolment,” he complained.

“I met Dr. Yaw Adutwum and personally handed a copy of the school current situation to him, upon several letters sent to him, but he is yet to respond to us,” the Assembly member added.
