Akrokerri (Ash), Jan 9, GNA - The Amansie West District Assembly has offered full scholarship to the 250 untrained teachers in the district who have taken advantage of the Untrained Teacher Training Diploma in Basic Education (UTTDBE) programme. Mr Ben Kwakye-Adeefe, District Chief Executive, who announced this, said the programme was of immense importance to the district in view of the serious shortage of trained teachers in the area. He was speaking to journalists at the weekend, when he visited the Akrokerri Teacher Training College where the UTTDBE was being organized for about 1,300 untrained teachers from five districts in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Kwakye-Adeefe said he personally attached a great deal of importance to the programme in view of the benefit it would bring to the district and pledged the assembly's preparedness to bear all expenses on feeding, accommodation and stationery for trainees from the district. In addition, the District Assembly would pay the transport expenses of volunteer teachers from the district to encourage them to pursue the programme. Mr Kwakye-Adeefe advised the teachers to make good use of the golden opportunity being offered them in line with government's policy of poverty reduction and improvement in education. Most of the teachers who interacted with the journalists expressed their appreciation to the government for the programme and said it would give them the opportunity to become professional teachers.
