National Olympians Association inaugurated

Accra, Dec. 23, GNA - A National Olympians Association, comprising athletes, coaches and administrators who have participated in the Olympic games since 1952 was inaugurated in Accra on Friday. Mr B. T. Baba, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), also swore into office new executives made up of only athletes to steer the affairs of the association.

Reverend Osei Kofi (The dribbling wizard) who participated in the Olympic games from 1962-72 heads the six-man executives who were all elected unopposed.

The rest were Rose Hart - Vice President, Grace Armah - Secretary General, Mary Mensa - Treasurer, Daniel Adomako and G. S. Laryea - members while Mr Baba elected as Honorary President.

The Association, a requirement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to facilitate communication and friendship, tap the talent of older Olympian and to establish a link between them and the young ones. It is also to cater for the general well being of the older ones and to chart a new course for the world body.

In an inaugural message read his behalf by Dr Owusu Ansah, Technical Director at the Ministry of Education and Sports, a deputy sector minister Mr O. B. Amoah urged the association to focus on the HIV/Aids pandemic and the issue of doping/drugs that have been associated with sports in recent times.

He challenged them to target the youth on matters such as health, development and peace.

Also present were some new Olympians including Eric Nkansah, Ignatius Gaisah and Kennedy Osei.
