The Obuasi municipal assembly announced an immediate ban on the use of mobile phones by teachers in the municipality during contact (teaching) hours.

The Chief Executive Joseph Kojo Boampong announced the ban at a ceremony to present 25 colour television sets to 25 selected basic schools in the municipality to augment the President's Special Initiative on the teaching of Maths, English and Science in basic schools.

The Municipal Chief Executive told the gathering of teachers, parents, pupils and assembly members that any teacher who flouts the ban will be severely dealt with.

He explained that use of mobile phones by teachers during contact hours threatens pupils' attentiveness as well as that of the teachers as there is no concentration.

'We are not saying you cannot use mobile phones at all, but please use them only before or after teaching hours” he lamented.

Hon. Boampong told the gathering that, the move forms part of efforts to ensure that the municipality maintains its lead in the B.E.C.E league.

The municipality topped the 2005 B.E.C.E league with the best result countrywide for the second time running.
