Bawku (UER), Dec.12, GNA - The Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education and Sports, has presented 1,053 optical lens spectacles worth over 150,000 dollars to adult learners within Bawku municipality and Garu-Tempane district to help improve their vision for reading. The British Government following an appeal by the NFED to help adult learners having problems with reading donated the spectacles "Adaptive Eye Care Lens". The spectacles, which are the first to be introduced into Africa, have specially-made liquid attached to help users adjust it to suit their vision for reading.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku, Mr Lawrence Gyamera, Team leader of the screening exercise, said the spectacles were given to only learners who underwent screening and found to have difficulty in reading. He said most of the learners' vision became impaired with age and had difficultly in reading from the blackboard and books, therefore, the exercise would help them to stay in the classroom to learn their lessons. Mr. Gyamera said the exercise enabled the team to detect other eye defects of the learners and those who could not be assisted with the spectacles were referred to eye specialists. He said 10 referral cases were made. Mr Gyamera said the learners were educated on the use of the spectacles to prolong its use and more spectacles would be provided to those who could not get them in future.
