The Deputy Trade Minister has advised owners of struggling businesses to consider merging to save their companies form collapsing and prevent jobs losses.

Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah said industry players should consider the coming together as a solution to many of the collapsing companies to save their businesses.

Speaking at the official launch of AirtelTigo Business service at the Mariott Hotel in Accra on Friday, he said, “It is very sad that when many companies do not do well knowing perfectly that the only solution they have is to merge with a stronger partner or make themselves available to be acquired, they will rather see their companies die.”

According to the Minister, running a telecommunications network business is pretty difficult and industry players should not sit down for their businesses to collapse.

In November 2017, leading providers of mobile telecommunication services in the country, Airtel and Tigo, announced the launch of a joint brand.

The brand was to advance their commitment to providing the best mobile and fixed telephony service and solutions to consumers and businesses.

The talents, technologies and tactical expertise of Airtel and Tigo are now unified as AirtelTigo.

Lauding such a smart move to make the networks more formidable, Mr Ahenkorah stated that his Ministry will embark on a strategic industrialisation programme to support Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

He believes the programme will strengthen, drive as well as make the telecom industry flourish.

“The SMEs have supported our economy up and today and we have to do everything possible to make them feel important so they can keep supporting the economy,” he said.

The Deputy Trade Minister added that “It is the reason for coming up with legislation acts to have an enterprise authority and the National Board for Small Scale industries into a regulatory body that will assist SMEs to do better”.
