The President of Breast Care International (BCI) Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai has stressed the need for the training of community based nurses in the fight against breast cancer in Ghana, in the absence of mammogram machines at the remote areas.

She said, these nurses, who are the first point of call at these health facilities should be eqipped with the knowledge of breast cancer management for screening and referral to bigger hospitals.

The Breast Surgeon Consultant said this in a health outreach and education programme on ThursdayJanuary 17, 2019, in Sefwi Akontobra in the Western region, which was organised by Fanoma Consult and sponsorsed byDelta Airlines.

The programme was graced by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sefwi Akontobra, Hon. Alexandra Tetteh, DCE for the area, Hon. Yawson Amoah, District Health Directors and the Chiefs of the area.

Residents in and around Sefwi Akontobra and students of Akontobra SHS who participated were screened on breast and cervical cancers, hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Wiafe Addai who is also the CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals in Kumasi and Accra explained that the unavailability of mammograms for the screening and detection of the disease at the regional capitals hinders the fight against the disease.

“Women living in the remote areas should be able to access breast cancer treatment without difficulties. Since the mammograms are not available at the community health centers, these nurses trained in the management of breast cancer should be able to screen them and make referral when necessary to the bigger hospitals,” she said.

She added that “the fight against the disease shouldn't be limited to urban centers but to the hinterlands where most case of the disease are recorded because of lack of access to quality healthcare and these nurses will avail themselves in the education, screening of the disease.”

The MP of the are, Hon. Alexander Tetteh, expressed appreciation to the BCI team and promised to sponsor some nurses in his constituency to be trained in breast cancer management.

“In appreciating Dr. Wiafe Addai and his team for her benevolent and hard work, i will collaborate with her to sponsor nurses so that they can also take up the opportunity into our health centers so that in case of any screening, they can do it so that if there is any referral, they can refer it to Dr. Addai in Kumasi,”
