Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Erkuful, has launched an electronic learning platform dubbed, 'Wolo' that seeks to improve the academic performance of students in Senior High Schools (SHS) in the country.

The platform covers subjects such as Science, Business and General Arts, which are taught by tutors from top-notch schools with excellent track- record.

Lessons, which are delivered using e-teaching method, are available in videos with self test that are accessible via the internet and digital television.

The technology also has specifically designed application to prepare students for examination based on SHS syllabus, a library with free books and bookstore.

Present at the launch, which took place at the Ebenezer SHS in Accra on Tuesday, January 15, 2018, were the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ablekuma West, George Bray, the headmaster of the school, Kofi Mensah and some educational heads in the district.

Mrs Owusu-Erkuful, who is also the Minister of Communications, said that the ban on mobile phones should be re-examined.

She appealed to schools to monitor the use of mobile phones by students.

The Minister urged students who are on vacation to make optimal use of the platform so as to improve their academic performance.

“It's imperative that students are encouraged to make use of their time. While you are here learning you won't be out on the street doing anti-social things,” she said.

She added that the government, through the Communication Ministry, would push for the adoption of the platform nationwide through partnership with other agencies like the Ghana Investment Fund and Electronic Communication (GIFEC).

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Wolo Ghana Limited, Joe Anim, in an interview, disclosed that the company would require funding to make the platform accessible offline especially in areas where the internet is not available.

He expressed the readiness of the company to partner stakeholders in ensuring that the project benefits all communities in the country.

Mr. Anim said, “To the telecos, this is something they can do to help children by reducing the data charges.”

Mrs Owusu-Erkuful, who was on a tour of the constituency, also cut sod for the construction of the Shiabu Police Post which is expected to improve security in the area.
