Kenneth Ashigbey, former Managing Director of Graphic Communications is urging media owners to adopt a strategic approach to curtail increasing attacks on media practitioners in the country.

“It is about time you [media organisations] woke up to say that enough is enough…we need institutions like the Media Commission, we need institutions like the GJA [Ghana Journalists Association] to take a strategic reaction and nip this in the bud,” the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, stated on Ghana Connect, Friday, January 18.

His comments follow the gruesome killing of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a key member of Tiger Eye P.I, a private investigations company, owned by an undercover journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas. He was shot twice on the chest and once in the neck on Wednesday night at Madina in Accra, while driving hospital to see his ailing child.

He was buried on Friday, January 18, in accordance with Islamic custom.

The late Hussein-Suale was a key member of the team that produced the #Number12 documentary which exposed rot in the game of football across the African continent.

The former Managing Director of the state-owned newspaper, Daily Graphic, said the time is now for owners and managers of the Ghanaian media to say “No” to the series of unwarranted attacks on journalists for doing their work.

“We’ve spoken for too long as journalists,” the outraged media rights advocate told host, Evans Mensah and demanded action from the National Media Commission (NMC), the GJA and media owners to protect journalists in the country.

“We need to get the businesses that want to run as media to come together…because at the end of the day it is the people who are trying to do good jobs that are beaten,” he said.

Other discussants on the programme included Fraud and Security analyst, Richard Kumado; Director of AA Productions, Esther Armah; General Manager for The Ghanian Chronicle newspaper, Ebo Quansahas well as an investigative journalist with The Multimedia Group, Manasseh Azure Awuni.
