Jospong Group of Companies has stated that the lack of landfill sites in the central part of Accra is one of the major factors contributing to the poor sanitation in Accra.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, today [Monday] Group Head of Communications, Sophia Lissah noted that the lack of these landfill sites is one of the country's biggest challenges.

“Right now, Accra does not even have its own landfill site. In Accra alone, we generate over 3000 tonnes of waste on a daily basis. Thankfully we have a recycling plant, we are able to recycle about 600 tonnes of waste, now what happens to the remaining? , it goes to the landfill site and we don't have enough landfill sites in Accra and that a major thing,” she said.

She also lamented over poor law enforcement in the country in regards to the sanitation problems the country is facing.

Madam Lissah also noted the need for every household to have a bin towards realizing President Akufo-Addo's vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020.

“The President has the vision of making Accra the cleanest city by the time he leaves office, it is possible but some factors must come into play for such a thing to happen and one of those major things is people having waste bins in their home and taking it to the next level of having such bins on the streets,” she said.

Last year May, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, mentioned that the limited waste disposal sites in the national capital was hampering government's agenda of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of Nana Addo's first term.

According to him, the only landfill site available, the Kpone landfill site, is unable to contain the waste generated in the city each day.

Mr. Ashitey told Citi News that government was considering deployment of technology to find an alternative means of effectively disposing of waste in Accra.

“We have only Kpone landfill site which is working. One problem we have is how to dispose of the waste. Now our waste disposal sites are not sufficient, and so we are thinking of the use of technology to manage this. So many people have come forward and very soon, others will start turning the waste into other things. If we do so, then our cities will become cleaner,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo in April 2017 promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his tenure in office.

“The commitment I want to make, and for all of us to make, is that by the end of my term in office, Accra will be the cleanest city on the entire African continent. That is the commitment I am making,” he said.

More than two years after the announcement, many have doubted the President's vision since nothing significant has been undertaken to rid the city of its heavy filth.
