The Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Doku has disclosed that the heavy Police and Military presence currently in Alavanyo and its environs is going to be sustained until peace is restored in the area.

The presence of the security agency in the area became necessary following renewed clashes in the area on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile the police is accusing the youth of Alavanyo Dzogbedze of starting the fight that resulted in the death of two residents and injured 9 other persons. The incidence occurred when the Youth allegedly engaged a military-police team in a gun battle over the weekend.

It is reported that police who had intelligence that some people were massing up weapons in the town on Sunday dispatched a six-member police team to ascertain the truth in the information. The Police upon arriving in the area were outnumbered and the youth seized three of their handcuffs as well as an AK-47 rifle.

Heavy Police presence has been present since that development with the aim of calming things to avoid any unfortunate happening. Speaking to Class FM on the matter yesterday, DCOP Francis Doku stressed that they are doing everything in their power to retrieve the AK47 and they are not resting until they do so.

He has assured that they are poised to restore peace in Alavanyo to ensure the safety of residents are guaranteed in order for them not to be living in fear and panic.

“We are not going to withdraw today, neither are we going to withdraw tomorrow. We will ensure that peace prevails within the environs”, the Volta Regional Police Commander said.

He continued “The military have sent reinforcement team and we want to believe that between now and tomorrow the situation will come down because as we were leaving Kpando for the Ho the information that was coming was that the firing has almost subsided.
