Defective Nogahill Footbridge On N1 Highway To Be repaired Soon - Highway Authority
14.01.2019 LISTEN

The Ghana Highway Authority has said its attention has been drawn to defects in the footbridge situated around Nogahill on the Achimota-Fiesta Royale stretch of the N1 highway. Parts of the footbridge has shifted from its original position, with visible cracks on the floor of the facility as well.

A press statement issued by the Chief Executive of the Ghana Highway Authority, Mr. Godwin J. Brocke, said the defects were caused by a vehicle that hit the footbridge “on Thursday evening resulting in the displacement of the deck by a few centimetres.”

“The Ghana Highway Authority wants to assure the public that plans have been completed for the repair of the deck. A contractor is presently mobilizing to execute works which are expected to be completed in 3 days,” the statement added.

The Authority in the statement also said the current state of the footbridge poses no risk to the public's safety.

“We wish to establish that the current state of the footbridge poses no risk to public safety.”

Over 60% of highway crashes recorded on N1-Report

About 60% of road crashes on major national highways in Accra, were recorded on the N1 highway, according to the first AMA Road Safety Report, analysing data from 2011 to 2015.

Answering questions on the floor of parliament, Roads and Highways Minister, Kwesi Amoako Atta, indicated that the construction these footbridges would add to already existing interventions to deal with road accidents on the N1.

“In 2019, three footbridges would be constructed each at Lapaz junction, Akweteyman Junction and Awoshie,” the Minister said.

These footbridges would be part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) – Bloomberg initiative for junction improvement to enhance pedestrian safety and avert accidents.
