The wife of late MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan has filed her nomination to contest the vacant seat.

Voters in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency would go to the poll on January 31st to elect a new MP.

The seat became vacant following the death of the MP, Emmanuel Agyarko last month.

Filing her nomination, his wife said she will continue the good works started by her husband.

“The late Honorable Agyarko started hospital project, road network, and scholarship scheme for students and market women, health care and sanitation, for me my vision is to continue from where he left off, and with the help of all us, I hope and pray that we can achieve this,” she said.

The widow of the late MP for the constituency, emerged victorious in the party's primaries, on December 30, 2018, by securing 441 votes out of 672 total ballots cast.

Reverend Edward Agyekum Kufuor, son of former president John Kufuor, dropped out of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Ayawaso West Wuogon primaries out of respect for the late Member of Parliament and his widow, Lydia Alhassan.

He said he stepped down because he was uncomfortable contending with Lydia Alhassan in the same race.

His withdrawal leaves five persons to contest the seat including a Deputy National Communications Director of the NPP, Mame Yaa Aboagye, Madam Victoria Esinam Ansah Offei, Assembly Member for Legon Electoral Area, Samuel Amankwah, a former constituency youth organizer, and Lydia Alhassan, a widow of the late MP for the area, Emmanuel Agyarko.

The NPP has held this seat since 2000 but Delali Kwasi Brempong of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is hoping to capture the seat.
