A total of two hundred and seven (207) people were killed in road crashes in the Central Region last year, 14 more than the previous year's total of 193. They were made up of 152 males and 55 females with 40 of them being below 18 years.
Ms Linda Affotey-Annang, Acting Central Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), made this known in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Cape Coast.
In all, the region recorded 904 road traffic accidents and involved 646 commercial vehicles, 539 private and 237 motorbikes.
The number of injured persons stood at 1591 compared with the year 2017 figure of 1,545.
Pedestrian knock downs, however, reduced to 249 from 307 in 2017.
Ms Affotey-Annang mentioned speeding, drunk driving, fatigue, mechanical faults, disabled vehicles, poor visibility at night, tyre bursts, wrongful overtaking and overloading of vehicles as some of the causes.
She added that the NRSC would not relent in its efforts at helping to bring down road crashes through sustained safety education campaign and the enforcement of road traffic regulations.
She advised drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users to be careful when using the road.
