Oti Region: Buem Chief Wants Jasikan as Capital

Oti Region: Buem Chief Wants Jasikan as Capital
11.01.2019 LISTEN

After the massive endorsement for the new Oti Region in the December 27, 2018 referendum, the next level will be the selection of a regional capital but many have tipped one of Jasikan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta Dambai and Kete Krachi to be chosen as the regional capital for Oti Region for many different reasons.

And for Nana Opraw VIII, the Acting President for Buem Traditional council, Jasikan has been in the forefront of leadership in the Oti Enclave and is best positioned to be the regional capital.

“We have come to a very crucial point in the process of the declaration of the new regions. Now that we have put the referendum behind us, questions are popping up concerning where to site the regional capital. Historically, Jasikan has been the capital for the Buem-Krachi since December 1952.

Thus, it could be said that Jasikan gave birth to all the other districts and with its geographical location, Jasikan is best positioned to hold the Regional Capital for Oti region…”

Nana Opraw further encouraged Government not to concentrate all administrative institutions in one place.

He noted that such a development will undermine the main purpose of the creation of the Oti Region.

“…It is important from the onset for Government to determine and review over time, a regional development model that seeks to make judicious use of the natural and other resources of the Oti region. The concept should be one that benefits every community within the Oti region.

It, therefore, will not make good planning to combine in one place all major functions and activities of the Regional Capital. In view of the foregoing, Buem is looking at the regional capital Territory which comprises an administrative capital with other functional activities appropriately located outside the capital.”

Taking his turn to address a victory rally in Jasikan after the referendum, Mr. Lawrence Aziale, DCE for Jasikan indicated the readiness of Jasikan to host the regional capital, noting that they have a residency for the Minister and other facilities to host regional administrative structures.
