Tempers Calm Down In Chereponi After Violent Clashes

Calm has returned to Chereponi in the Northern Region following a violent clash between the Konkombas and Chokosis which resulted in at least three deaths and several injuries.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Mohammed Yusif Tanko who confirmed to thepressradio.com on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 said the presence of a joint team of military and police personnel deployed to the Chereponi district has helped for calm to be restored especially after the incident caused fear and panic.

“So far, as the police is concern for the past three days no violent incident has been recorded due to the joint team of military and police personnel deployed to the Chereponi district” he indicated.

He added that a joint press conference held at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) on Monday, 7 January 2019 by the Leadership of the Konkombas and their colleagues from the Chokosis calling for peace and unity indicates that the two parties have understood the need to ensure peace and order in Chereponi district.

The renewed clashes between the Konkombas and Chokosis resulted in the burning down of several houses and properties in Nandoni, a farming community in the district.

The Chokosis and the Konkombas have been fighting over the ownership right of a parcel of land.

According to DSP Mohammed Yusif Tanko, the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) will be meeting the Leadership of the Konkombas and their colleagues from the Chokosis today in order to maintain peace and order restored in chereponi.
