Akufo-Addo Announces ¢1.75m Compensation For Families Of 7 Killed By Police At Manso Nkwanta

Families of seven persons shot dead by police at Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti region are to receive ¢1.75 million compensation. Each family is to get ¢250,000, President Nana Akufo-Addo announced Tuesday at the launch of the Zongo for Peace and Development initiative in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi

The compensation follows a report by a fact-finding committee into the July 17, 2018 fatal shooting of the seven persons at Manso Nkwanta within the Amansie West District.

The fact-finding committee found, there were no facts to establish that the deceased persons were armed robbers who engaged in exchange of fire with the police.

According to the police officers, the victims allegedly belong to a gang of robbers who killed their colleague Lance Corporal Daniel Teiku on July 1, 2018.

Some of the family of the victims say autopsy reports handed to them indicate that the victims were shot at close range , fueling suspicion that the killings were deliberate.

Zongo chiefs in the district rejected the police’s narrative while youths backed thier call for investigations with days of spontaneous violence.

Top government officials moved into the Asawase community to speak with community’s leaders. But even the presence of a government delegation in the community sparked scenes of aggression.

A convoy of government vehicles meandered its way out of the town as pockets of angry youths stood along the road gesticulating in anger.

Since the incident, 21 police officers have been interdicted with a recomendation from the fact-finding committee to prosecute them.
