Ghana Library Authority To Build 15 Libraries To Promote Literacy

The Ghana Library Authority is set to build 15 libraries across the country this year 2019 as they look to implement measures to ensure they get more people to read in order to increase literacy in the country, Chief Executive Officer for the Ghana Library Authority, Hayford Siaw has disclosed.

According to the Library Authority, they have declared 2019 as a year of reading. They say that in order to achieve their five set objectives for the year, they are going to see to the construction of 15 new libraries to complement the existing 61 libraries in the country.

“As part of efforts to be able to get Ghanaians to read, we have declared 2019 as our year of reading and basically we have outlined five main objectives that we want to be able to achieve in the year 2019”, Mr. Hayford Siaw said in an interview with Class FM earlier today.

He stressed that one the five objectives they are prioritizing is the promotion of literacy and life-long learning. They believe that in order to achieve that they will need to make available more libraries and also supplement the existing ones with the needed materials.

The Library Authority is additionally coming up with various targeted campaign programmes which will be focusing on vulnerable groups of people that are denied the opportunity of resources in terms of books to be able to increase their literacy levels.

Mr. Hayford Siaw further shared “And so one of the goals under the National year of reading is to expand access to various library points and we anticipate that this year maybe about 13-15 new libraries will be added to the current blue print. We are still open to work with different corporate institutions that are willing to support existing systems to be able to make the necessary impact in this country”.
