A 28 year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment with hard labour by the Tarkwa circuit court for stealing. The convict stole GHȼ2,208.00, 12 mobile phones, an apple iPad and one HP laptop all valued at GHȼ11,766.00.

Kofi Doku, a resident of Mankessim in the Central Region, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, causing damage and stealing.

Superintendent of Police, Thomas Osei Ababio, the District Police Commander of Tarkwa, told the Ghana News Agency that at about 2:00 am the police during their night patrol duties arrested Doku in Abiola and Brothers Phone Shop around the Tarkwa main bus terminal.

He said General Lance Corporal Asare and his colleagues escorted the suspect who was then holding a nap sack bag containing a cash sum of GHȼ 2,208.00, 12 mobile phones, an apple iPad, HP laptop, a screw driver and two pliers to the Tarkwa police station for questioning.

The police made a complaint that the suspect and two others on the run had broken into Abiola and brothers phone shop through the roof and stole the items.

Superintendent Ababio said police men were dispatched to the crime scene where they discovered that 41 assorted mobile phones valued GHȼ32,580.00 and a cash sum of GHȼ5,455.00 had allegedly been stolen from Kwaku Dominic's phone shop as well.

According to him, the police scouted the various shops around the Tarkwa main bus terminal in order to bust the two alleged suspects but all proved futile.

Upon interrogation, Doku told the police that he carried out the operation solely, adding that he came to Tarkwa three days earlier to survey the area before the operation.

The District Commander said information gathered by the police indicates that apart from the two mobile phone shops that Doku targeted he also broke into several shops through the ceiling but he did not steal any item.

He added that the suspect claimed that when he realised people were pursuing him he started moving from one shop to the other in other to escape.

Superintendent Ababio explained that the shop owners have come to identify their items.
