Six New Year Babies Recorded At Upper East Regional Hospital
03.01.2019 LISTEN

Midwives at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga successfully delivered six new born babies on New Year's Day as compared to ten deliveries on January 1 in 2018. Five out of the number were normal deliveries while one was through a Caesarean Section (CS) with all mothers and babies in healthy condition.

Madam Rashida Eliasu, a Senior Staff Midwife who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the Maternity Unit at about 00:30hours, said three of the babies were males while three were females, adding that the very first delivery of the day was a male baby.

She said all mothers and babies were healthy and under supervision.

Madam Eliasu used the opportunity to advice expectant mothers to always be 'birth prepared and complications ready' once they realize they were pregnant.

She said that expectant mothers needed to acquire essential items such as pad, mackintosh, cot sheet and other personal belongings for their use, and make arrangement for blood to be donated on their behalf as well as a ready means to transport, which would convey them at anytime to a health facility.

'They should try to get all their items ready and stop accusing midwives of selling things to them,' she emphasized.

Madam Eliasu further urged them to ensure that their homes, businesses and any other issues that may get them worried were in good hands as part of preparations towards child birth, insisting that 'when issues at home are in good hands, it prevents them from thinking, which may increase their Blood Pressure (BP).'

She advised pregnant women to eat well, balanced and nutritious diet, protect themselves from all forms of infections, including malaria, and to ensure they rested well and got enough sleep.

Some mothers who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity, expressed gratitude to God for save delivery on the first day of the year, and described their babies as 'special new year gifts from God.'

When the GNA visited the Hospital on January 1, 2018, a total of ten deliveries, including a still birth had been recorded, out of the ten deliveries; three were female and seven males.
