Rural communities are not to feed contractors working on water projects

Koforidua, Nov 23, GNA - Mr Philip Amanor, the Eastern Regional Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), has said rural communities were not supposed to feed workers of contractors working on water and sanitation projects in their communities. ''Contractors are paid and they are supposed to use part of the amount to pay their workers.''

Mr Amanor was speaking at a day's workshop for District Chief executives, District Co-coordinating directors and District directors in-charge of water and sanitation from the 17 districts in the Eastern Region on Tuesday.

He said some community leaders sometimes collected money from the people and gave them to the workers as incentives and that this should stop.

Mr Amanor appealed to DCEs whose districts would be benefiting from the DANIDA Phase II Water and Sanitation Programme to check such tendencies and urged them to include women in the water and sanitation committees to be formed in their communities.

He said the current DANIDA Phase II programme would be covering 50 districts in the Eastern, Volta, Greater Accra and Central regions. The project would cost 60 million dollars and would be demand-driven so that those districts that complete their projects in time would be in a position to request for more funds and projects.
