The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with support from Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) has launched a mini Christmas road safety campaign with a donation of policing accessories to the Accra Central Motto Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, to help enforce road traffic regulations during the festive season.

The donated items include reflective cones, lighting batons, reflective vests, directional and stop signages as well as examination gloves.

The campaign which is under the theme ‘Slow Down; the faster you drive the deadlier the consequence’ aims at sensitizing drivers and motorists in the city on the need to reduce speed and obey speed limits in order to save lives, before, during and after the festive season.

Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of AMA, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who launched the campaign in Accra on Wednesday said the Assembly as part of efforts to ensure road safety in the city had developed a road safety report , a pedestrian safety action plan, a road safety strategy, undertaken road assessments of all the major roads in the city to inform decision making, as well as begun some road safety enhancement works at Lapaz intersection.

He also urged all drivers and motorists to drive and ride with care, wear seatbelts and helmets at all times, use child restraint, avoid drunk driving and above all, reduce their speed and obey speed limits in order to avoid crashes and fatalities during the season.

The Central MTTD Commander, ACP Fosu Ackaah, who received the items on behalf of the department expressed gratitude to AMA-BIGRS for taking pragmatic measures in ensuring road safety in the city, adding that the objective of the campagin was to make conscious efforts for drivers, pedestrians and other road users to stay alive and celebrate the Christmas responsibly .

He directed all MTTD Commanders to deploy their personnel effectively to manage the traffic during the festive season as well as take a critical look at the motor bike menace and the illegal use of bus stops as lorry terminals.

Madam Catherine Hamilton, Greater Accra Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, on her part, urged corporate Ghana to invest resources into researches, policy formulation and sponsorship of road safety campaigns adding that her outfit had intensified road safety education and sensitization programs across Ghana.
