The Minister of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has recently donated more than 500 bags of Greenfert organic fertilizer to some farming communities in the Eastern and the Volta Region.

The donation, which forms part of a national tour by the officials of the ministry, was meant to acquaint them with activities of small scale farmers across the country and to maximize the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.

The Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto at Komokli, a farming community near Oterkporlu in the Yilo Krobo Municipality donated more than 100 bags of Greenfert organic fertilizer to improve the yield of crops for farmers in that community.

At Keta, a sizeable number of vegetable farmers were also given some of the fertilizers to improve their yields.

“The Greenfert fertilizer was a token from the Ministry to some of the farmers we visited during our national tour, and it’s tested as one of the best organic fertilizers within the national fertilizer subsidy programme,” Dr. Afriyie Akoto said.

The Planting for Food and Jobs programme, he said, has been extended to Senior High Schools across the country under the ‘Food Farms for Schools’ (FOFAS) initiative.

As of last year, about six senior high schools were engaged in the initiative, but the number has multiplied to a total of 26 schools who are participating in the programme in 2018.

FOFAS was to encourage senior high schools to utilize available lands for farming purposes.

“As more schools engage in the FOFAS, it is our hope to occasionally bring such support including donation of free fertilizers to encourage them to cultivate more,” the Minister noted.
