Ghana Committed To Promoting International Peace For The Realisation Of Security And Prosperity

Ghana will continue to support the efforts of the United Nations in promoting international peace and order, economic growth and development as important tools for the realisation of security and prosperity of member states.

Madam Adisa Yakubu, Deputy Director, Multilateral Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MoFARI), said Ghana had always worked closely with the UN in achieving its objectives of promoting international cooperation and improving the living standards of people and will continue to do so.

She noted that in addition, Ghana would continue to export the strength of its democratic institutions by building on its democratic processes to serve as an inspiration for stability and progress Africa.

She said Ghana was a beacon for African Independence and Unity at the time it joined the United Nations in 1957; adding that 'now it is a beacon for democratic governance, the rule of law, stability and progress'.

Madam Yakubu made these remarks at a UN Outreach Forum for Students to Mark the 73rd UN Day Celebrations in Accra.

The global theme for the 73rd UN Day celebration is: 'Making the UN Relevant to all People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.'

The event was organised by the Ghana United Nations Students Association (GUNSA) with support from MoFARI and various UN agencies in the Ghana.

It was attended by over 500 students from selected senior high schools and tertiary institutions.

Madam Yakubu recounted that Ghana joined the UN Ghana on 8th March, 1957, soon after gaining independence; declaring that since joining the organisation, Ghana had played an active role in the realisation of its fundamental values, notably, maintaining peace and security in the world.

She said Ghana firmly believes that the UN was the most viable forum in the world today for the pursuit of international peace and security.

She said it was in this connection that Ghana had supported various interventions of the UN in the areas of conflicts prevention and the maintenance of peace and security.

She said since joining the UN, Ghana had actively contributed to UN peacekeeping across the world.

Madam Yakubu cited that personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service had served as UN peacekeepers since the early 1960s when Ghana first participated in UN peacekeeping Operations.

Mr Kwashie Klu-Duvor, National President, GUNSA, said the event was organised to create a platform for students and the youth to deepen their knowledge and understanding of UN.

Mr Anani Yao Kuwornu, Youth Wing Coordinator, GUNSA, lauded the late former UN Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan for his outstanding performance in promoting global peace and security.

Speaking on the topic 'The UN, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Young People', Mr Kuwornu said it was important to intertwine the role of the youth with the objectives of the SDGs; stating that every country's biggest assets remains its manpower.

He said GUNSA had contributed significantly to the quality national human resources, through its training and youth engagement programmes.

Madam Linda Gyala, National Communication Officer, UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), said in order to ensure global peace and development for all, the UN spirit and its work remain the guardian of world peace.

'In our pursuit of greater development and prosperity, there are greater opportunities than challenges for the pursuit of lasting global peace and sustainable development for the UN,' she said.

Speaking on the topic 'Significance of the United Nations in Maintaining Global Peace and Development', Madam Gyala said the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development was the UN's top priority in the field of development.
