School Toilet Under Greater Accra Metropolitan Area - Sanitation And Water Project Inaugurated At Adenta

Mr Alexander Nii Noi Adumuah, the Adenta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has inaugurated seven school toilet facilities under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area - Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA-SWP) in the Municipality.

The beneficiary schools are Mercy Islamic School, Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Primary School, Islamic Council of Development, Education and Humanitarian Services (ICODEHS) Primary School, Abubakar Sidiq Islamic School, Saint Francis Catholic School and Adjirigano AdMA Primary School.

The project brings to 103 school toilet facilities completed out of 406 earmarked to be constructed in schools in the 11 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.

It forms part of measures to improve sanitation in schools and communities was being funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR).

The overall objective of the GAMA-SWP is to increase access to improved sanitation and water supply in low-income urban communities; and to strengthen management of environmental sanitation and hygiene in the Greater Accra Region.

Mr Adumuah in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after handing over the facilities said the Municipality was embarking on vigorous public health education to ensure that the residents get new sustainable environmentally friendly and affordable toilets in the schools and communities.

He said 970 toilet facilities have so far been built in the Adenta Municipality out of the 1,000 earmarked for construction under the GAMA-SWP, adding that; 'these facilities would improve sanitation in the area.'

Mr Adumuah urged the people to take advantage of the programme to ensure clean environment.

He said effective sustainable portable water and related sanitation services, and promotion of hygiene in the communities was important to the Assembly.

The MCE said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has focused on mobilizing resources to improve sanitation and water supply for the citizenry.

Mr Adumuah urged heads of beneficiary schools of the GAMA-SWP toilet facilities in the Adenta Municipality to place emphasis on the teaching and learning of environmental health and hygiene to instill good habit in the students.

'One way of sustaining good sanitation is to teach the children how to properly manage waste so that they grow with it,' he said.

Mr Gabriel Engmann, an Engineer of the MSWR said as part of the project, school sanitation and hygiene education was being carried out in all the 11 MMDAs within the GAMA-SWP jurisdiction.

He urged the school authorities to seriously supervise the usage of the toilet facilities to maintain good sanitation and environmental hygiene among the children.

Mrs Frances Mabel Williams, the Municipal Director of Education of the Ghana Education Service expressed gratitude to the government and the World Bank for the school toilet project and advised the School Management Committees and the Parent Teachers Association to monitor the management of the facilities.
