Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - The European Commission (EC) on Friday presented a sponsorship package to a journalist of the Ghanaian Times, Ms Akosua Asare-Kuma, to participate in EC Journalists Seminar scheduled for Brussels from December 5 to December 9.

The seminar to be attended by journalists from the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries is aimed at creating opportunity for media practitioners to study the European Union governance systems, parliamentary deliberations and general administration.

The participants would also be exposed to the working relationship between ACP countries and the EU, with particular emphasis on country specifics and share national working experiences with other practitioners attending the seminar.

Presenting the sponsorship package to Ms Asare-Kuma at the Ghana International Press Centre, Mr Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi, Head of Delegation of the European Commission in Ghana, expressed concern about the apathy and lack of enthusiasm exhibited by Ghanaian journalists in the competition for selection of candidates.

He urged journalists to utilise opportunities aimed at developing their professional skills and capabilities.

"Between eight and 10 places were reserved for journalists from ACP countries, but only six practitioners from Ghana participated in the competition."

Mr Sebregondi, who is also the EU Ambassador-Designate, noted, however, that the selection of a Ghanaian journalist was ample evidence that media practitioners in the country could compete with others on the global scene.

He said the inclusion of ACP journalists in the seminar formed part of European Union's development policy to provide opportunities for ACP media practitioners to understand the Union.

Ms Asare-Kuma commended the EU and other institutions that supported Ghanaian media through sponsorship and award of scholarships to journalists to attend seminars and workshops locally and internationally.

"Such educational packages have contributed to the high journalistic standards and exhibition of professionalism in the local media landscape especially the collaboration between media practitioners and newsmakers," she said. 18 Nov. 05
