MTN Ghana Foundation in collaboration with Dext Technology is set to present 2,000 science sets to pupils in deprived 14 selected Junior High Schools across the country worth GHC126,060.

About 290 science sets have been donated to both Nima Cluster of Schools and La Nkwantanang Cluster of Schools in the Greater Accra Region to improve their basic skills and knowledge in science.

The Senior Manager, Sustainability and Social Impact, MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr Robert Kuzoe said the Foundation is passionate about equipping the next generation with the requisite skills and information on the relevance of science and technology.

Mr. Kuzoe noted that the donation will help develop the pupil’s interest in science and improve their studies in a way that will enhance their academic performance.

He indicated that the science sets will also help bridge the knowledge gap between under-deprived public schools and the private institutions in order to compete as equals.

“With this support, it means we are going to enhance creativity, innovation, knowledge and basic skills in science. This will also help develop the interest among these school children to take their science courses serious,” he stated.

Mr. Kuzoe posited that each school will receive 140 to 145 of these sets depending of on the student population in addition to a comprehensive user-training for selected science teachers in these schools.

According to him, teachers and instructors of the beneficiary schools have also been trained to enable them teach the students using these innovative science sets in the classroom.

“So far, training for 28 science teachers in these selected schools have been completed and the distribution of the sets has begun in the Greater Accra Region with La Nkwantanang Cluster of Schools and Nima Cluster of Schools,” Mr. Kuzoe intimated.

He emphasized that priority was given to some MTN-adopted schools nationwide as this will help MTN revisit these schools and ensure a continuous support for these schools.

The Marketing Officer of Dest Technology, Caleb Fugah, developers of the science sets said there is a widening between theory and practical studies of science in the country.

He added that the focus of this project is to support school without science labs with science sets to enable them demonstrate what they learn in the classroom.

“If the nation wants to industrialise its economy, then it needs to pay attention to science because the factor of production which includes technology are built from different components of science,” Mr. Fugah stated.

According to him, the science sets can be used to conduct over 20 experiments including light, electromagnetics, rectilinear propagation of light, resistors and more in the electrical system.

The Head Teacher of the Nima ‘1’ Basic School of the Nima Cluster of Schools, Theodora Abalo expressed her gratitude to the officials from MTN for their kind support.
